Grammar Spot!

So far we have seen the words for places in the town in their basic form with DER, DIE and DAS in front of them.

(That is, from a grammatical point of view, the nominative form with the definite article (the).

However, if we are talking about what places there are in our town, the way we use the words will change.

Look at the examples in the tables below. We are now using the words for "a" in a variety of expressions (grammatically, the indefinite article in the accusative).

Was gibt es in deiner Stadt?

Masculine Feminine Neuter
der Park die Post das Kino
the park the post office the cinema
Es gibt einen Park. Es gibt eine Post. Es gibt ein Kino.
There is a park. There is a post office. There is a cinema.

Likewise:

Masculine Feminine Neuter
der Bahnhof die Bibliothek das Schloss
the station the library the castle
Wir haben einen Bahnhof. Wir haben eine library. Die Stadt hat ein Schloss.
We have a station. We have a library. The town has a castle.

To Summarise:

THE (Nominative) A (accusative)
Masculine der ---> einen
Feminine die ---> eine
Neuter das ---> ein
